WHAT CAUSES MAN TO FALL
COMPLACENCY
I get surprised when I see people
living as if life is about to end. Many people think they have arrived when
they attain unimaginable heights in life. They end up relaxing and having the
mindset of enjoying the fruit of their labour. My dear, it is very good to
enjoy the fruits of your labour but that is not the end of the road. The road
on earth ends when you die and even after that, there is life after death. It
does not end here. There is still a long way to go.
Complacency has killed many dreams than
genocide. It has crippled many ideas and is still the cancer in the heart of
potentials. Complacency is a disease. Never think you have arrived or where you
have gotten to is enough. It is good that you have achieved your target, but it
is better if you set another. The sea is the biggest water body, yet it still
accepts raindrops.
A certain rich man attained maximum
increase in his harvests and investments. He was astonished that very year
because all angles of his business had sky-rocketing success. This man felt
complacent and he ended up losing it all.
“And he spake a
parable unto them saying, ‘The ground of a certain rich man brought forth
plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, what shall I do, because I
have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said this will I do: I will pull
down my barns and build greater, and there will I bestow all my fruits and my
goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many
years; take thine ease, eat, drink and make merry’” (Luke 12:16-19).
This rich man was a great investor who
owned numerous businesses. He got extensive increase from all his ventures and
he became the world´s richest business tycoon of that generation. He extended
his store rooms till the rooms were not enough to contain his harvest. This
rich man became complacent, he told himself he had arrived and it was time to
just enjoy what he had accrued over the years. The spirit of complacency was at
work and that led to his drastic downfall.
“But God said unto
him, thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall
those things be, which thou hast provided” (Luke 12:20).
Complacency makes one fall without
realising it. It is a deteriorating tool that catches you unawares when
falling. I am surprised at people when they say the sky is only the limit. I
think they forget to realise that beyond the sky, there is still something. The
sky should never be the limit. There is more to achieve; there is more to do
and there is always more to ask for like Oliver Twist.
Complacency prevents you from taking
risks. The complacent is always comfortable with the level he has attained. He
is not eager to test the waters of new ventures. The moment he attains a certain
height, nothing triggers him to move forward. In the name of preserving
traditions, they are not willing to take risks or change the plan whenever
necessary. That it is always done a certain way does not mean you can’t do it
better. You will always lose if you are complacent. The complacent hates
competition. His motto is, “Forever we will maintain the standards.” My dear,
software are always updated; technology is always advancing and that is the
reality. We now live in a competitive world where settling on average is an
adage of the past.
“You will never be entirely
comfortable, this is the truth behind the champion – he is always fighting
something. To do otherwise is to settle.” – Julien Smith
“The quickest way to run out of time is
to think you have enough of it.” – Stewart Stafford
“Do not be complacent about your
achievements and not strive for continual improvement when you get to the top.
As soon as you let success go to your head, you sink into following familiar
patterns and play it safe. In other words, you risk losing your edge.” – Roy T
Bennett
According to Wiener in the article, Complacency in Aviation, “Complacency is
caused by the very things that should prevent accidents; factors like
experience, training and knowledge contribute to complacency.” People become
complacent when they feel they are experienced in their fields of endeavour.
